A Short Biography of Sarah Teather,
MP
PLEASE
NOTE: this site is owned my an admirer, NOT Ms Teather!
Sarah Teather, a liberal democrat, has
served as a member of the British Parliament since 2003, winning
election on her second attempt to enter Parliament. Sarah was the
youngest person to be elected to the British Parliament, and her
election represented a major swing away from the Labour party. Sarah
was re-elected in 2005.
Born 1 June 1974, in Enfield, London, Sarah Teather earned a degree
in Natural Sciences, with a specialty in pharmacology, from
University of Cambridge. She then studied for her PhD at the
University College London, but left without completing her program.
After leaving the university, Sarah began working her way into
politics by becoming a policy advisor for various social groups, and
eventually a science policy advisor to the British government.
As an MP, Sarah has gained a reputation as a passionate and active
member of Parliment, working hard to represent the interests of all
her constituents. In her position, Sarah has fought against serious
social issues such as local health cuts and the war in Iraq. She has
fought to better the housing crisis, and worked on various
environmental issues. Sarah has also pushed for her constituents on
more minor issues, such as Post Office closures and government ID
cards.
Always active on the behalf of her
constituents, she fought resolutely for one of them who was being
held at Guantánamo Bay without official charges or access to a
trial. In her efforts, Sarah organized a neighbourhood vigil, and
visited the United States capitol to lobby on his behalf. Always
willing to take a stand, Teather helped draft a letter, speaking out
against the then party leader Charles Kennedy, expressing an
unwillingness to work under Kennedy due to a generally perceived
inability of Kennedy to perform on behalf of the party; Kennedy
resigned later that same day.
Teather has earned a reputation as a strong liberal spokesperson for
the people, and is considered one of the highest profile members of
British Parliament. She has served as the Liberal Democrat
Spokesperson in a number of areas, including health, education, and
community and local government; she currently serves as the Shadow
Minister for Housing. Her voting record shows her coming out
strongly in favour of a ban on smoking, strongly in favour for an
investigation into the Iraq war, in favour of a hunting ban, laws to
stop climate change and equal rights for gays. She has consistently
voted against introducing ID cards and anti-terrorism law.
Sarah still lives in the area of Brent East that she serves, and
maintains a constituency office that is open to the public every
single day. The community that Sarah Teather serves is among the
most culturally diverse in England; in an attempt to best
communicate with those she serves, Teather spends her free time
studying conversational Gujarati, Hindi and Urdu.
